Why do artists paint landscapes? On Saturday 5 December 2026, the MJC in Cavaillon hosts an art history lecture on landscape painting with Rosalind Archer. From wild moorlands to valleys stretching towards the sea, discover how painters have portrayed nature, landscapes and the traces of human activity throughout the centuries.
A valley, a wild moorland, a castle on the horizon... In the hands of an artist, a landscape becomes far more than a simple backdrop. It reflects a way of observing the world, contemplating nature and depicting the places around us. Throughout the centuries, landscape painting has also revealed the presence of people and the changes they have made to their surroundings.
Join Rosalind Archer to explore different representations of landscapes, from ancient burial mounds and castles to open moorlands and valleys overlooking the sea. Through works of art, discover how painters have combined observation, imagination and sensitivity to express the relationship between people, nature and their environment.
A fresh approach to art history, offering a deeper understanding of how landscapes, whether real or imagined, also tell the stories of the societies that have shaped them.
