The Fracture is a one-on-scene by Yasmine Yahiatène, about family memory, identity and transmission.
Born in northern France, to an Algerian mother and a Kabyle father, the artist questions how her French education erased her Kabyle and Algerian culture.
A sensitive and poetic show, to be discovered in Cavaillon on Tuesday, November 24, 2026.
“Go back to my father's story. Go back to my story.” With The Fracture, Yasmine Yahiatène tries to trace the story of her father to understand where his “monsters” come from.
The show addresses family silences, taboos, shame and legacies linked to the history of Algeria.
Sensitive research on political identity, memory and what is sometimes transmitted without words.
Through rich writing, this one-on-scene superimposes words, bodies and images.
Equipped with VHS tapes, a camera and a white marker, the artist roams the stage like a soccer field during the 1998 World Cup.
With videos and drawings, Yasmine Yahiatène tattoos parentage, braves the silence and sets out in search of the memory of her family.
“Prolix about her intentions and the path that led to this creation, Yasmine Yahiatène delivers in a short hour an object of few words. Chosen and rare, they insert themselves with the power of simplicity into a graphic composition where drawing and video combine brilliantly.”
