The Portrait of Rita show, originally scheduled on January 15, 2027 at La Garance in Cavaillon, is cancelled. This creation by Laurène Marx, played by Bwanga Pilipili, reveals Rita's journey and questions racism and mechanisms of exclusion through three perspectives.
CANCELLED — The performance scheduled for Friday, January 15, 2027 at 8 pm will not take place.
Alone on a bare set, in front of a microphone, Bwanga Pilipili tells the story of Rita's journey based on interviews conducted with Rita Nkat Bayang. A Cameroonian businesswoman who became a household helper, Rita is also the mother of Mathis, 9, who was confronted with racism at school and then with police violence.
The show offers three perspectives: that of a mother directly at the heart of the story, that of an actress who observes while she herself is confronted with racism, and that of the author, Laurène Marx, who questions her own position.
These three perspectives intersect to address systemic racism, dehumanization and mechanisms of exclusion.
With Portrait of Rita, Laurène Marx pursues a theater that seeks to make heard the voices of those who are often left on the margins of society.
The deliberately sparse device — a performer, a naked stage and a microphone — places the story and the spoken word at the center of the show.
