Little-known caves under Saint-Charles College

Visit the caves of Collège Saint-Charles in Cavaillon

Under Saint-Charles College there is a network of caves whose history goes through several eras. From Antiquity to the Second World War, these spaces have had different uses: possible Roman place of worship, mushroom farm, hideout of resistance fighters or even a playground for young Cavaillonnais.

For 30 minutes, the visit allows you to explore these underground spaces and to trace their various occupations. In particular, the Jouve brothers left the trace of their passage in the caves, adding another testimony to the history of this place that is rarely accessible to the public.

The discovery continues for 30 minutes in the Saint-Roch Chapel, which is exceptionally open for the occasion. An exhibition presents the results of archaeological excavations conducted in 2011 during the creation of the Saint-Charles gymnasium.

A visit to the 2026 European Heritage Days in Cavaillon

This visit is organized by the Heritage and Museums Department of the City of Cavaillon as part of the 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days in the Luberon. In particular, the 2026 edition highlights the theme “Heritage at Risk: Reviving, Resisting, Reimagining”.

The exceptional openness of the caves and the Saint-Roch chapel thus makes it possible to explore a more confidential facet of local heritage. To extend the visit, also find the historical sites, monuments and other places to discover in Cavaillon.
