Traditional Lavender Distillation Workshop

From July 1 to August 23, 2026, the Lavender Museum Luberon in Coustellet offers a traditional lavender distillation demonstration, included with the museum entrance ticket.

Lavender distillation demonstration around a traditional still at the Lavender Museum in Coustellet

In the museum gardens, visitors discover the secrets behind the production of essential oil around an authentic open-fire still dating from the late 19th century, now adapted to gas heating. Around this still, each visitor discovers the fascinating alchemy that makes it possible to obtain, through steam extraction, the precious lavender extract known as essential oil.

Accompanied by the distiller, you will dive into an ancestral Provençal know-how and observe the different stages of the distillation process. The explanations also help to understand the differences between fine lavender, the iconic wild plant of the mountains of Provence, and lavandin, the more widespread cultivated hybrid.

The operation of the Florentine flask, used to separate the essential oil from the floral water, is also presented. Between lavender fragrances, traditional gestures and exchanges with the distiller, this demonstration offers a moment that is both educational, immersive and friendly.

Highlights of the workshop

Depending on the time chosen during your booking, you can attend and take part in different stages of the traditional distillation process around the still.

  • Filling the still: in the morning at 10:00 am and in the afternoon at 2:30 pm
  • Sorting the essence in the Florentine flask: at 4:35 pm
  • Emptying the still: twice a day, at 12:35 pm and 5:25 pm

The distillation can be observed and is explained throughout the day, allowing visitors to understand each step in transforming the lavender flower into essential oil.
