As the 230th anniversary of the Battle of Arcole approaches, this event looks back at a major episode in the Napoleonic campaigns.
From 15 to 17 November 1796, French troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte fought the Austrian forces of General József Alvinczi in the marshes between the Adige and the Alpone, in Veneto.
The talk will also highlight the story of André Estienne, a young drummer from Cadenet who became famous for his courage.
The Battle of Arcole opposed Napoleon Bonaparte’s French troops and the Austrian forces commanded by General József Alvinczi.
The fighting took place in the marshes of Veneto, between the Adige and the Alpone, where the French troops sought to cross the Alpone.
The story of André Estienne connects this European episode with the local memory of Cadenet and the Luberon.
It was during these days that André Estienne, a young drummer from Cadenet, particularly distinguished himself.
Used to swimming in the Durance, he crossed a canal by swimming while beating the charge, a gesture that remained in local memory.
