Château La Sable - Cucuron

Château La Sable is one of the oldest private cellars in the Luberon. Today it is a family estate that extends over nearly 14 hectares, including 10 hectares of vines. Surrounded by a forest of oaks and hundred-year-old plane trees, the sandy soils give the wines freshness and elegance.

The tasting cellar is open every day (except Sunday) in season, but do not hesitate to contact them if you wish to taste outside of opening hours.

The history of the estate

The estate's history began with the construction of the bastide in the 18th century, which is the oldest part of the estate. In the 19th century, Victor-Etienne PASCAL, the owner of the estate, added two towers on either side of the main building.

The establishment of vines in the Luberon region dates back to antiquity, but it was during the inter-war period that the expansion was most significant. The 1970s saw a need for modernisation in the vineyards, and it was at this time that Château la Sable became a wine estate.

The estate was bought in 1964 by the Lembo family and in 1967 the first vines were planted on the estate. The first winery was built in 1986. The estate is thus one of the oldest private cellars in the Luberon.

From the summer of 2017, Virginie and Jean-Marc Mercier worked to restore the estate's private cellar. 2018 is the year of their first harvest, and it is the impetus for the revival of Château La Sable.

From vine to wine

In 2018, Château La Sable started working the vineyard using organic methods, without chemicals, weed killers or mineral fertilisers.

Their primary objective is to find the right balance between the soil, the plant and the climate, while preserving the environment. Particularly delicate work is carried out on the oldest vines (50 years old). Just as much precision and attention is paid to the planters: 1.3 hectares planted in 2018 and 3.3 hectares in 2019. The work in the cellar is carried out with the minimum of intervention possible.

They now offer 5 cuvées: two rosés, two whites and one red. Between fruit, roundness, power and freshness, each cuvée is the reflection of a precise work and in agreement with the soil.
