From 25 September to 1 November 2026, the Salle des Arcades in Lauris hosts “Purple: a colour from the sea”, an exhibition by Inge Boesken Kanold devoted to purple, a pigment extracted from the murex that has inspired the artist’s historical and artistic research for several decades.

In Lauris, the exhibition traces Inge Boesken Kanold’s long-running research into purple, a pigment extracted from the murex and used since Antiquity as an imperial dye. The German painter, who lives in Provence, has spent several decades exploring rare colours and forgotten techniques.
The exhibition invites visitors to look at colour from a different perspective through parchments, dyes, marks produced by murex shells and artistic creations. Here, purple is more than a shade: it becomes a material for experimentation, a subject of research and a link between history and artistic creation.
Inge Boesken Kanold began this quest in 1979. After 26 years of research, she succeeded in 2005 in rediscovering a process for recreating this pigment, whose production techniques had been lost over the centuries.
Before turning her attention to purple, Inge Boesken Kanold explored other rare colours and pigments, including indigo, orpiment and cinnabar, which she encountered during her research in Asia.
Since 2020, the artist has continued this exploration through other pigments and larger formats. Her work brings together material, colour, history and artistic creation, giving renewed visibility to techniques and shades that have sometimes been forgotten.
