The Château de Clapier takes its name from the Provençal clapas, which means heap of stones, in tribute to its stony soil which today gives all their minerality to the wines of the estate.

In the 16th century, the estate was the hunting den of the Marquis de Mirabeau, political figures and wine lovers.
In 1880, Théodore Barataud, a miller from Marseille, acquired the estate and built an avant-garde cellar for the time, with twelve giant casks and a steam engine.
Since the 1920s, the Montagne family has continued the winemaking history of the estate, now led by Thomas Montagne, the fourth generation of winemakers.
From the Marquis de Mirabeau to modern winemakers
Over the centuries, Château Clapier has passed through the ages: former property of the Provençal nobility, a national property after the Revolution, then a modernised wine estate at the end of the 19th century.
Henri Montagne, Thomas Montagne's grandfather, settled on the property in the 1920s. His son Marien succeeded him, before Thomas Montagne took over the estate in 1995.
Since then, the estate has been modernizing its tools, including stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, while maintaining its heritage and engaging in more sustainable viticulture.
Terroir & know-how

The Château Clapier vineyard is located at the foot of the mountain, in the natural and preserved setting of the AOC Luberon, within the Luberon Regional Natural Park.
The vines are located between 200 and 450 meters above sea level, on rich soils composed of Miocene sands, clay soils and limestone scree at the foot of the mountain.
The mountainous presence favors strong thermal amplitudes between day and night, giving wines freshness, balance and aromatic expression.
A fresh microclimate and a late vineyard
The Château Clapier vineyard benefits from a cold microclimate linked to the Mirabeau Défilé, the narrowing of the Durance Valley where the river makes its way between two limestone cliffs.
The cold air coming from the Alps remains retained in the vineyard, which delays the awakening of the vine and helps to protect it from spring frosts.
This microclimate also creates very cool summer nights, encouraging grape maturation and the development of aromatic precursors. In particular, it explains the unique presence of Pinot Noir at the estate.
Traditional viticulture, a partner of nature
On the vine side, Thomas Montagne practices traditional viticulture, respectful of the land and attentive to the life of the soil.
The choice of spontaneous grassing has been carried out at the estate for a long time. The mechanical maintenance of this natural plant cover promotes the biological activity of the soil and improves the health condition of the vine.
Combined with sunshine and the Mistral, this approach makes it possible to reduce the use of inputs and to limit the environmental impact of the estate.
Wines & cuvees

The 35 hectares of vineyards of Château Clapier give birth to wines that reflect the full potential of Luberon: the power of the Rhône and the sun of Provence.
The estate works with 12 different grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, which is an exception in the region.
AOC Luberon, IGP Mediterranean or Vin de France, each cuvée is designed with the same passion, between indigenous yeasts, few sulphites and the search for a personal expression of the land.
