Château de Clapier, the ambassador of Pinot Noir in the Luberon

Château de Clapier vineyard in Mirabeau, in the Luberon

Located in Mirabeau, at the foot of the mountain and in the heart of the Luberon, Château de Clapier is a family-run wine estate whose story has been passed down since 1880.

Once owned by the Marquis de Mirabeau in the 17th century, the estate now produces white, red and rosé wines within the AOC Luberon appellation area.

Led by Thomas Montagne, owner and winegrower, Château de Clapier works with 12 different grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, a rare exception in this region.

This distinctive touch gives the estate’s wines a unique identity, combining Mediterranean power, freshness and originality.

A mountain terroir ideal for wines with character

The Château de Clapier vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir for winegrowing. The entire AOC Luberon area is nestled in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park and stretches across 36 communes in the south-east of Vaucluse.

One of the key features of this terroir is its mountainous character. The vines, located between 200 and 450 metres above sea level, benefit from significant temperature variations between day and night, helping to bring balance and aromatic expression to the grapes.

The soils, composed of Miocene sands, clay and limestone scree at the foot of the mountain, combined with a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Alps and the Rhône Valley, provide ideal conditions for growing vines.

A microclimate well suited to Pinot Noir

The Château de Clapier vineyard enjoys a cool microclimate linked to the Mirabeau Gorge, a narrow section of the Durance Valley where the river passes between two limestone cliffs. This natural climatic barrier holds back the cold air coming from the Alps and slows the awakening of the vines.

This later start helps to limit exposure to spring frosts. In summer, the cool nights encourage slow ripening and a beautiful aromatic expression of the grapes.

It is in this setting that the estate grows Pinot Noir, a Burgundian grape variety renowned for its finesse and elegance. Planted in the early 1980s, it now benefits from a special exemption allowing Château de Clapier to use it in blends for its Luberon wines.

Traditional winegrowing that respects the land

In the vineyard, Thomas Montagne practises traditional winegrowing, with close attention paid to the soil and living ecosystems. The use of spontaneous grass cover has long been part of the estate’s approach.

Mechanical maintenance of this plant cover encourages biological activity in the soil, limits vine vigour and helps improve vine health. Combined with the sun, the mistral and the Luberon climate, this approach helps reduce inputs and limit environmental impact.

Wine tasting, historic cellar and vineyard treasure hunt

The estate welcomes visitors for a tasting of its wines and a discovery of its historic cellar. This place, steeped in history, is marked by an impressive set of 12 large oak vats dating from the 19th century.
