When to go?

This trail starting from Cavaillon can be hiked all year round. It is especially pleasant in spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild.

In summer, the ascent via the Way of the Cross can quickly become challenging under the sun: consider an early start and avoid the hottest hours of the day. Bring plenty of water and wear a hat.

As with any hill walk, make sure to check the forest access conditions, regulated from June 15 to September 15 depending on fire risk.

From the town center or hill parking lot, follow a simple and well-marked trail that leads you into the heart of the garrigue. This family-friendly loop follows the route of the ancient Via Domitia, a famous Roman road that once linked Italy to Spain, itself originally a Gallic path used by the Cavares tribe.

The trail gradually ascends to the Saint-Jacques Chapel, perched at 180 meters. From here, enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over Cavaillon, the Durance Valley, the Vaucluse Mountains, and on clear days, all the way to Mont Ventoux.

Along the way, you'll spot ancient cart tracks carved into the rock—evidence of the intense goods traffic throughout the centuries. The route also passes caves, old limestone quarries, and the site of a former hermitage once inhabited by Saint César de Bus, a spiritual figure who founded a religious order in the region.

This is an easy walk for all ages that combines natural immersion, historical heritage, and stunning landscapes.
