The science of taste: when science comes to the table

Science Festival 2026 in Cavaillon and its theme exploring the science of taste

For its 2026 edition, the Science Festival in Cavaillon explores food, taste and cooking from a scientific perspective. At the Science Village, visitors are invited to observe, experiment and get hands-on to understand what happens in our food and how our senses work.

Molecular cooking, taste perception, edible and aromatic plants, sustainable food, biodiversity, astronomy and new technologies are all explored through practical experiments and playful activities.

A programme to enjoy as a family, with plenty of opportunities to experiment, ask questions and discover science during an afternoon in Cavaillon.

Workshops and experiments at the 2026 Science Festival

The Science Village brings together a wide range of contributors offering experiments, games and hands-on activities. Visitors can explore several scientific themes throughout the afternoon.

Taste, food and plants

Les P’tits Déb’ offer five workshops focusing on food:

  • physico-chemical transformations in cooking and molecular cooking;
  • how the senses and brain shape our perception of food;
  • the role of food in health and how our organs work;
  • good habits for a balanced diet;
  • the environmental challenges linked to our food choices.

L’Amuseum offers games and educational challenges exploring the biodiversity of the Luberon. Activities are suitable for all ages from 3 upwards and include a discovery game focusing on aromatic plants.

Terre en Tête offers a fun, scientific introduction to Provence’s aromatic plants and the ways in which they are transformed.

Savante Nature introduces visitors to wild edible plants through the five senses: observing, touching, smelling and even tasting plants or homemade preparations.

France Nature Environnement explores sustainable food through educational games and sensory workshops based on the shapes and scents of Mediterranean fruits, vegetables and plants, along with their properties and uses in cooking and natural remedies.

Astronomy and space

Astro Planétarium offers 30-minute planetarium sessions, with a 15-minute interval between each session.

Parc du Cosmos explores the Sun’s energy through a model and video, introduces the planets through games and offers the opportunity to observe the Sun through a telescope.

Digital technology and innovation

Avenir 84 presents several demonstrations focusing on artificial intelligence, including facial, object and number recognition, a 3D scanner and a scale model of an autonomous exploration vehicle.

Café Tronik introduces visitors to the Fab Lab environment and digital manufacturing tools including 3D printing and laser cutting.

Creativity, environment and everyday actions

LMV – Waste Prevention and Recycling Department offers an escape game along with activities focusing on transformation, recycling and composting.

Origami workshop: a creative and playful introduction to the art of paper folding.

Okhra offers a mini-workshop where visitors can make and apply paint.

La Tivoli Expérience: magic, perceptions and flavours

Arthur and Céline Tivoli, the Magiciens du Garlaban, present a special Science Festival version of their show La Tivoli Expérience.

For 50 minutes, children and adults are invited to put their senses to the test. Flavours, perceptions, memories of taste and the mysteries of cooking become the starting point for illusions, experiments and surprises.

Two free performances take place at 2 pm and 3.30 pm in the Salle du Grenier at the MJC. Places are limited and no reservation is required.
