From 12 September to 30 October 2026, the exhibition La Mémoire des Anciens gives a voice to six residents of Oppède through their portraits and personal stories. Displayed in the heart of the village, these testimonies invite visitors to discover a living memory, both seen and heard, thanks to QR codes accessible from a smartphone.

Six large-scale portraits of Oppède residents are displayed throughout the village, telling its story through the people who have lived there. Behind each face are memories, personal journeys and a deep connection with the local area.
This exhibition is not only meant to be seen: it is also meant to be heard. For each portrait, a QR code gives access to the photographed person’s story on a smartphone. It creates a simple dialogue between image and voice, passing on the spirit of the village through those who have watched it change over time.
Portrait by portrait, La Mémoire des Anciens becomes an open-air gallery where photography, personal testimony and local memory come together.
Le Verbe et l’Image
La Mémoire des Anciens is part of the “Le Verbe et l’Image” cultural trail organised in Oppède to celebrate the Bicentenary of Photography. Here, photographic portraiture becomes a means of passing on memories: the image preserves faces, while the spoken word brings the village’s memories and history to life.
The exhibition is one of several events organised across the area to mark this anniversary. Discover the Bicentenary of Photography programme in the Luberon.
