Le Regard en héritage, a photography season across the region

Le Regard en héritage - Bicentennial of Photography in the Luberon

Two centuries of images

Two hundred years of capturing the world

From the earliest experiments of Nicéphore Niépce to contemporary digital practices, photography has never stopped evolving. Portraits, landscapes, photojournalism and artistic creations have made it at once a record of our times, an artistic language and a collective memory.

A photography season

Photography as a common thread

As part of the Bicentennial of Photography, Le Regard en héritage presents a cultural season across Luberon Monts de Vaucluse. Exhibitions, workshops, encounters and screenings bring together different periods, techniques and perspectives through documentary photography, the local area, transmission and contemporary creation.

From Oppède across the region

A project that connects without standardising

Born in Oppède around Le Verbe et l’Image, the project is gradually expanding to towns, villages and cultural venues across the area. Each place retains its own identity, artists and initiatives: the aim is to create connections between the different projects.

Photography thus becomes a shared language connecting residents, visitors, artists and generations, while offering a fresh perspective on the region.

A shared ambition

Four verbs to tell the story of photography

For two centuries, photography has documented, preserved, revealed and reinvented the way we see the world. Le Regard en héritage explores this richness through four key ideas that run throughout the season.

Document

Photography shows the world and preserves a record of it. It tells the story of history, bears witness to social realities and gives a face to the women and men who shape our societies.

Pass on

Photography is a legacy to be shared. It preserves memory, connects generations and passes on stories, works of art and know-how.

Reveal

Photography invites us to see our surroundings from a different perspective: landscapes, villages, heritage, people, biodiversity and local memory.

Invent

Photography is an ever-evolving art form. Historic and contemporary processes, artistic creation and digital practices encourage new ways of experimenting with images.

Four perspectives on photography

Document the world, observe the region, pass on memories or experiment with new forms: choose your perspective and discover the associated exhibitions, workshops, encounters and screenings.

01

Documentary perspective

Photography as a way of telling the story of the world and its realities: wars, societies, human journeys, personal accounts and major documentary photographers.

02

A perspective on the region

Photography as a way of seeing our landscapes and those who live in them differently: villages, nature, animals, residents, families, heritage and everyday life.

03

A legacy passed on

Photography as a way of exploring its history and techniques while passing on memories: the history of photography, historic processes, family memories and photographic know-how.

04

Creative and contemporary perspective

Photography as a way to experiment, create and invent new images: Polaroid, cyanotype, light painting, smartphones, image editing, stop motion, AI and new practices.

The photography season

Different perspectives coming together across the region

From one town or village to another, photographers, artists, media libraries, associations and cultural venues come together to create a diverse programme. Some events tell stories about the world, while others explore the local area, pass on memories or experiment with new forms of creation. The journey begins in Oppède, where the momentum behind this photography season first began.

Where the project began

Oppède, where it all began

The momentum behind Le Regard en héritage began in Oppède. From summer 2026 onwards, photography took over several locations around the village through Le Verbe et l’Image, before the project gradually expanded across Luberon Monts de Vaucluse.
