Overview of the hike

« This hike is a true classic of the Monts-de-Vaucluse! Longer and more complete than the nearby gem of the Lagnes discovery trail, yet less demanding than the full loop taken in the opposite direction, this version has the advantage of going straight to the essentials. Hilltop village, breathtaking views, cedar forests, the Plague Wall, old farming terraces... Wonderful! »

Starting from the center of the village of Lagnes, this marked loop (PR and GRP) invites you to explore the unspoiled landscapes of the Monts de Vaucluse, between rocky ridges, oak forests, and historic trails.

The route begins gently through the village’s narrow streets before gradually ascending to the Tête du Soldat, a rocky outcrop offering panoramic views over the valley. The trail then continues through the forest, dotted with spectacular viewpoints (caution advised) and more technical descents into the Espéracons valley.

You’ll then walk along the famous Peste Wall, a dry-stone structure built in the 18th century to protect the Comtat Venaissin from the plague outbreak originating in Marseille. Between historical heritage and immersion in wild nature, this section plunges you into local history in a peaceful, remote environment.

The final part of the loop passes through garrigue, farm tracks, and shaded woodlands, for a gentle return to Lagnes.

When to go?

This loop from Lagnes can be enjoyed year-round, but it is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, when the light highlights the contrasts between cliffs, woodlands and open views over the plain.

In summer, exposed sections along the ridges can be very hot: choose an early start and avoid the 12pm–4pm time slot. Shade is limited on some parts of the trail, so bring plenty of water.

Don't forget to check the access conditions to forest areas, which are regulated from June 15 to September 15 depending on the fire risk.

Practical tips

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes: rocky paths, steep climbs and technical descents await.
  • Bring plenty of water, especially in hot weather—some sections offer little shade.
  • Avoid hiking between 12 pm and 4 pm in summer; start early instead.
  • Pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Be cautious when crossing the D100 and near viewpoints.
  • Follow the PR, GR and GRP trail markers and stay on authorized paths.
  • Download the hike PDF and the GPX track before heading out.

Fire safety and regulations

  • From June 15 to September 15, access to forested areas is regulated.
  • Check the fire risk map for Vaucluse: www.risque-prevention-incendie.fr/vaucluse .
