Hike overview

"On the northern edge of the sensitive natural area of La Garrigue, a mosaic of extensive agro-ecosystems, including cereal fields, olive groves, former almond orchards and grazed dry grasslands, has helped preserve the largest French population of Garidella nigellastrum, a protected plant species of European interest. On the southern side of the site, a diverse landscape unfolds with open dry garrigue, thorny shrubland, herbaceous areas and natural meadows. Wildlife, birds, reptiles and invertebrates thrive here... and so do we!"

Accessible path in the heart of the pine forest at La Garrigue in Mérindol

Located in Mérindol, below the village on the Durance side, this walk starts from the La Garrigue car park and begins with a pleasant woodland section accessible to all, where the shade of pine trees accompanies your first steps. Very quickly, the atmosphere becomes distinctly Mediterranean, with the scents of the garrigue, soft filtered light and an immediate feeling of calm.

The path gradually leads to a natural viewpoint, one of the highlights of the route. The panorama opens wide over the Durance Valley, revealing a landscape shaped by water and time, between plateau, river and open spaces. This spectacular viewpoint is the perfect place to pause and enjoy the natural beauty of the site.

The walk then continues along the edge of the plateau in a more open environment. Visitors move through lively Mediterranean garrigue dotted with shrubs, dry grasslands and wilder areas where biodiversity thrives. Depending on the season, you may spot birds, insects, reptiles or typical flowering plants.

The route gently loops back through alternating clearings and pine forest, offering an easy and relaxing walk. This short immersion is a wonderful introduction to the natural landscapes of Mérindol: an accessible and refreshing walk, perfect for enjoying nature with views over the Durance.
