The intercommunal media library in Cavaillon presents an exhibition dedicated to Dorothea Lange, a major figure in 20th-century American photography, through 18 iconic photographs from the Great Depression loaned by the Musée Réattu in Arles.
An exemplary figure in 20th-century American photography, Dorothea Lange left behind a deeply humanist body of work, shaped by her view of the social crisis experienced by the United States during the Great Depression.
Her direct and innovative style gives her images exceptional testimonial power, making some of them true masterpieces in the history of photography.
The exhibition presents 18 photographs loaned by the Musée Réattu in Arles, covering the period from 1933 to 1940.
Dorothea Lange’s early street photographs open the exhibition and reveal her attention to faces, bodies and social situations.
From 1935 onwards, her assignments for the Resettlement Administration took her onto the roads and into the camps of workers, pickers and unemployed people.
With her husband Paul Taylor, Dorothea Lange published the legendary book American Exodus in 1939, devoted to displacement and disrupted lives.
Christine Cornillet will give a talk to help visitors learn more about Dorothea Lange’s photographic technique. Reservation recommended.
The exhibition opening will take place on Saturday 10 October at 5pm, at the intercommunal media library in Cavaillon.
