Best time to go

This demanding hike is accessible all year round, but the best seasons to enjoy it are spring and autumn. The weather is milder, the vegetation is lush, and the light over the ridges and the Apt valley is beautiful.

In summer, the hike can be tough: plan an early morning departure, bring plenty of water, and check the access conditions for forest areas to avoid fire risks.

From Lourmarin, this loop takes you on a challenging hike through the wild heart of the Luberon. After leaving the lively streets of the village, the path quickly climbs up to the wooded ridges of the Petit Luberon, offering a gradual immersion in preserved and spectacular landscapes.

The route crosses the Combe des Cavaliers, a dramatic rocky gash, and reaches the vast pastoral plateaus of the Pelat de Buoux. Along the way, you’ll encounter scree slopes, limestone faults, clifftop trails and forest zones, in a mineral, silent atmosphere where biodiversity flourishes.

The loop offers several stunning viewpoints over the Apt valley, the Grand Luberon and the Buoux cliffs. Passing by the old shepherd’s hut on the Pelat and dry-stone cabins evokes the pastoral heritage of these heights once roamed by flocks.

This 20 km tour is designed for experienced hikers seeking solitude, breathtaking views and an exceptional experience in the beating heart of the Luberon.
