The Reformed Church, a witness to the village’s religious history

Reformed Church in Puget-sur-Durance

Built in the 19th century, the Reformed Church of Puget-sur-Durance reflects the importance of Protestant history in this part of the South Luberon. It is an important landmark in understanding the village’s heritage.

Its construction led to strong rivalry between Catholics and Protestants, a sign of the tensions and balances that shaped local history for a long time. This simple and peaceful place now helps visitors understand this religious memory, still visible in the built landscape.

The village of Puget was partly repopulated in the 17th century by families, often of Protestant origin, who came to cultivate land that had remained almost deserted for a long time.

Discovery History

A history of renewal between the Durance, the Luberon and the cultivation of the land

History of Puget-sur-Durance

The history of Puget-sur-Durance is both ancient and eventful. Evidence of prehistoric life has been found in the surrounding caves, followed by remains of Roman occupation, including dwellings, baths and burial sites, confirming the long-standing presence of settlement here.

The name of the village refers to its perched position on a height overlooking the valley. But its history was marked by many hardships: floods from the Durance, epidemics, wars of religion, the abandonment of farmland between the 15th and 16th centuries, and then a slow return to cultivation at the beginning of the 17th century.

The true revival of the village began in 1619, when a lord from Dauphiné granted land to families who came to clear and cultivate it. This new settlement deeply shaped the identity of the village.

This history of disappearance, recovery and adaptation gives Puget-sur-Durance a unique depth that can still be felt throughout the visit.
