It has also seen its share of violent conflicts. As the Luberon Regional Natural Park aptly explains: “The location of the villages on hilltops is closely linked to the political context of each period.” In other words, the perched positions were chosen to ensure visibility and defense in times of war and instability. Starting in the 10th century, aristocratic families began settling on rocky prominences, giving rise to the picturesque villages we know and love today.
Built around a stronghold, often a castle at the highest point, the villages then extended down the slopes. Due to their elevated layout, most Luberon villages feature steep, cobbled streets called calades. To truly experience them, explore the historic center and take in the stunning views. Then, follow the sloping alleys that lead to lesser-known corners – often just as rich in history, curiosities, and local stories. For instance, venture beyond the main square of Gordes into the Fontaine Basse district, and you’ll discover a charming old washhouse. Did you know? The Luberon is a designated Regional Natural Park, and is even recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. That says a lot about the richness of our natural environment here in the heart of Provence. The region features low mountain ranges, vast plains, Mediterranean forests, and lively rivers – all of which serve as the scenic backdrop for our beautiful villages.
Each village, set within this natural setting, has its own unique charm. Take Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, for example – built against a dramatic 240-meter-high cliff, from which emerges the source of the Sorgue River: the largest spring in France and one of the most powerful in the world in terms of water flow. The nearby chasm and gorge also attract many curious visitors. This natural wonder has inspired other attractions, such as a working handmade paper mill, still in operation today. Its water wheel is powered by the very same spring.
In Cheval-Blanc, nature is just as present: the village is framed by two canals and surrounded by fertile orchards.
Some villages are even built into nature itself, using the limestone rock to create homes – like the underground dwellings in Gordes that offered cool shelter for many years, or the ancient troglodyte village of "le Jas de Puyvert," which is still inhabited today.
