What makes the villages of the Luberon so unique? They are perched – either atop rocky outcrops or nestled against the hillsides – always overlooking the surrounding countryside. Thanks to these elevated positions, they offer residents and visitors breathtaking panoramic views over vineyards, olive groves, orchards, lavender fields, and white oak forests.

Our villages have also managed to preserve their historic centers, along with the beauty of their original architecture and major landmarks such as castles, churches, and temples. Scattered across the region, the iconic villages of the Luberon give the area its character and stand as proud witnesses of its history, rising like remnants of the past and majestic stone sentinels of the present.

The villages of the Luberon: a journey through time

Talking about the villages of the Luberon means diving into their rich history and cultural heritage – the legacy passed down through generations, especially through the region’s remarkable built heritage. These villages seem to defy the passage of time. Will you believe it before seeing it for yourself? As you wander through their narrow streets, we offer you the chance to step back in time. Are you ready to take the leap?

Let’s go back in time, since we’re talking about a journey. The Luberon has always been a land of refuge – for the Waldensians, Jews, Catholics – from Roman times to the present. It has also seen its share of violent conflicts. As the Luberon Regional Natural Park aptly explains: “The location of the villages on hilltops is closely linked to the political context of each period.” In other words, the perched positions were chosen to ensure visibility and defense in times of war and instability. Starting in the 10th century, aristocratic families began settling on rocky prominences, giving rise to the picturesque villages we know and love today.

Built around a stronghold, often a castle at the highest point, the villages then extended down the slopes. Due to their elevated layout, most Luberon villages feature steep, cobbled streets called calades. To truly experience them, explore the historic center and take in the stunning views. Then, follow the sloping alleys that lead to lesser-known corners – often just as rich in history, curiosities, and local stories. For instance, venture beyond the main square of Gordes into the Fontaine Basse district, and you’ll discover a charming old washhouse. In short, take your time to wander, connect with the stones and their stories, and let yourself be transported out of time.

Our Luberon villages at the heart of natural heritage

Did you know? The Luberon is a designated Regional Natural Park, and is even recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. That says a lot about the richness of our natural environment here in the heart of Provence. The region features low mountain ranges, vast plains, Mediterranean forests, and lively rivers – all of which serve as the scenic backdrop for our beautiful villages.

Each village, set within this natural setting, has its own unique charm. Take Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, for example – built against a dramatic 240-meter-high cliff, from which emerges the source of the Sorgue River: the largest spring in France and one of the most powerful in the world in terms of water flow. The nearby chasm and gorge also attract many curious visitors. This natural wonder has inspired other attractions, such as a working handmade paper mill, still in operation today. Its water wheel is powered by the very same spring.

In Cheval-Blanc, nature is just as present: the village is framed by two canals and surrounded by fertile orchards.

Some villages are even built into nature itself, using the limestone rock to create homes – like the underground dwellings in Gordes that offered cool shelter for many years, or the ancient troglodyte village of "le Jas de Puyvert," which is still inhabited today.

And in another striking example, the village of Roussillon has taken on the vibrant hues of its natural surroundings – it sits at the heart of the largest ochre deposit in the world. A final, surprising detail that shows just how deeply our villages are tied to the awe-inspiring nature around them. In short, villages and nature go hand in hand in the Luberon – one cannot exist without the other.
