From September to November, the Luberon changes pace. The heat fades, the light turns golden and the temperatures become ideal for hiking, cycling, outdoor activities and visits to the villages.
It is also the season of the grape harvest, followed by the first olive harvests, with a cultural and nature programme that continues well beyond summer.
Here are five good reasons to discover it in autumn.
In autumn, the vines and deciduous trees take on yellow, russet and brown tones, while the lower light highlights the relief and the stone villages. The landscapes change week after week, with colours that are often at their best from late October to early November, depending on the year’s conditions.
In Gordes , the late-afternoon light beautifully enhances the stone façades and the relief of the Monts de Vaucluse.
Then continue on to Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey . At this time of year, the valley offers a very different landscape from the summer lavender fields.
The Luberon vineyards - after the grape harvest, the rows of vines gradually change colour. To combine scenery with a winery discovery, Château La Verrerie offers visits by reservation.
With temperatures dropping, autumn is a particularly good time for hiking in the Luberon. Forests, garrigue, limestone reliefs and villages can be explored on foot, from family walks to more challenging hikes.
At the Cedar Forest of Cabrières-d’Avignon , a botanical trail of around 3 km crosses cedar woodland and garrigue on a relatively flat route. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes: an accessible walk that works well for a family outing.

The Parc du Luberon’s guided nature outings
Several guided walks offer a chance to explore the area through geology, biodiversity and landscapes: 6 km in Vieil-Oppède on 28 October or 13 km along the ridges of the Petit Luberon on 4 November, among others. The outings are free, with booking required. View the Parc du Luberon programme .

With milder temperatures, autumn is a pleasant season to explore the Luberon by bike. Quiet roads, villages, vineyards and the relief of the Monts de Vaucluse can be discovered through routes suited to different levels.
The Gordes by bike route (PDF) links Gordes, Murs and Joucas along quiet roads through the Monts de Vaucluse. Stone villages, dry-stone walls, bories, old mills and open views of the relief shape the route. In autumn, woodland and vineyards add their colours to the ride.

For mountain biking enthusiasts
The Provence Luberon Lure mountain biking area offers many marked routes through the territory’s relief, forests and landscapes.
In autumn, the Luberon can also be discovered through its producers and at the table. Grape harvests, olive picking, the first truffles, seasonal markets and local cuisine set the rhythm of the weeks.
As autumn progresses, the olive groves enter harvest season. It is the perfect time to discover the mills, the work of the producers and how olive oil is made.
As part of Vignobles en Scène , the experience “Conquering green gold” at Moulin Bastide du Laval in Cadenet invites you to discover the olive grove, take part in the harvest, visit the mill and taste the estate’s oils.

In Les Beaumettes, the gourmet walk and truffle tasting combines hiking, rural heritage and a meeting with a family of truffle growers. After 7 km through bories, dry-stone walls, pine woodland and garrigue, the outing ends with an introduction to their know-how and a tasting.

The Luberon vineyards
After the grape harvest, estates continue to offer visits and tastings. Autumn markets
On the stalls, autumn takes over from summer: squash and pumpkins, chestnuts, mushrooms, grapes, quinces, apples and pears from the Luberon. It is also the time to take home garrigue honey, goat’s cheese or, from late autumn, the new olive oil. Check the days and times of the Luberon markets .
Seasonal restaurants
Squash velouté, slow-cooked dishes such as Provençal daube, pan-fried mushrooms or desserts with figs and quinces: in autumn, menus follow the market. To enjoy them, discover the restaurants and bistros of the Luberon , from village eateries to gourmet restaurants.
With milder temperatures, autumn is also ideal for outdoor activities and more sporty experiences. From cliffs to treetop courses, several activities offer a different way to discover the Luberon.
Accessible on foot from the town centre, the Via Ferrata of Cavaillon reaches the cliffs of Saint-Jacques Hill in around twenty minutes. Halfway between hiking and climbing, it offers views over Cavaillon and the valley from above.
