The Castle of Ansouis, the must-see of your visit

The Castle of Ansouis

It is impossible to visit Ansouis without looking up at its majestic castle, which overlooks the village from the top of the rocky hill. A true sentinel of the South Luberon, it is the great historical and landscape landmark of Ansouis.

Originally a medieval fortress, the castle was built as a vast quadrilateral flanked by towers and an important defensive system. Over the centuries, especially from the 17th century onwards, it gradually transformed into a pleasure residence while preserving all of its architectural strength.

The history of the site remains closely linked to that of the de Sabran family, a major name in the history of Ansouis. Taken over in 1936 by the Duke and Duchess of Sabran-Pontevès, then passed on to new owners in 2008, the castle underwent major restoration work that now allows visitors to fully appreciate its richness.

Open to visitors, furnished and still inhabited, it offers a particularly lively visit. Its architecture, terraces and relationship with the village tell the full story of Ansouis, between defense, prestige and the Provençal art of living.

Overlooking the rooftops of the village and the surrounding landscapes, the Castle of Ansouis is one of the highlights of the visit and one of the most emblematic monuments of the Luberon.

As you stroll along, Ansouis reveals everything that makes the charm of Luberon hilltop villages: narrow passageways, old façades, fountains, small squares and views that suddenly open onto the landscapes of the Aigues Valley.

More than just a setting, the village offers a true open-air heritage, lovingly preserved for centuries. It is this harmony between architecture, landscape and light that makes the walk so enjoyable.

Discovery Heritage

Saint-Martin Church, a spiritual and historical landmark of the village

Saint-Martin Church in Ansouis

Recognizable by its semi-circular forecourt and its golden limestone walls, Saint-Martin Church is one of the main heritage landmarks of Ansouis. The current building probably dates no earlier than the end of the 13th century.

Built against the inside of the village’s first fortified enclosure, the church retains an almost military appearance. It features a nave with three bays, a transverse nave vaulted with a pointed barrel vault, and an apse framed by two small apses.

The relics of Saint Elzéar and Delphine, major figures in local spiritual history, are preserved here and still inspire popular devotion every September.

Listed as a Historic Monument in 1925 and officially classified in 1988, Saint-Martin Church is an essential stop for understanding the religious and defensive history of Ansouis.

Discovery Heritage

The fortifications, gateways and belfry, traces of the medieval village

Fortifications and belfry of Ansouis

Ansouis has preserved many traces of its fortified past. From the two medieval walls to the old gateways, including the Petit Portail, the Grand Portail and the belfry, the village retains the memory of its defensive and communal organization.

The second fortified wall, built between 1331 and 1378, replaced an earlier enclosure that had quickly become too small. Even today, sections of ramparts, towers and altered defensive elements remain clearly visible throughout the walk.

The belfry, crowned with a wrought-iron campanile, recalls the central role of communal life in the village. It once called people to gather and could also sound the alarm in times of danger.

These remains give Ansouis a particularly tangible historical depth and make the village a true place of discovery for lovers of medieval heritage.

Discovery Culture

The Extraordinary Museum and the Museum of Wine Arts and Crafts, two unexpected visits

Museums in Ansouis

Ansouis is not limited to its monumental heritage. The village also opens the door to more unusual worlds with two cultural places that surprise visitors. The Extraordinary Museum created by Georges Mazoyer combines artistic creations, fossils, shells and curiosities in a unique atmosphere, including its famous blue cave.

Another must-see visit, the Museum of Wine Arts and Crafts at Château Turcan invites visitors to discover more than 3,000 objects dedicated to viticulture, cooperage and oenology. It is a place of transmission and culture deeply connected to the wine-growing identity of the region.

These two museums perfectly complete a visit to Ansouis by adding an original artistic, sensory and thematic dimension to the discovery of the village.

Discovery Culture

Ansouis and cinema, in the footsteps of Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources

Ansouis filming location for Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources

Like several villages in the Luberon, Ansouis served as a setting for Claude Berri’s cinematic diptych, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, released in 1986. This authentic, mineral and deeply Provençal setting perfectly matched the world of Marcel Pagnol.

Several memorable scenes were filmed inside Ansouis Church, including the sermon, the Christmas mass and Manon’s wedding. The outdoor scenes related to the church, however, were filmed in Vaugines, just a few kilometers away.

This cinematic presence still contributes today to the evocative power of Ansouis, where heritage seems to naturally interact with the Provençal imagination.

Discovery History

The Maison des Consuls and the Belfry, witnesses to the village’s collective life

Maison des Consuls and Belfry in Ansouis

Among the most interesting heritage elements of Ansouis, the Maison des Consuls and the Belfry tell the story of public life organization through the centuries. The former was the seat of the town council during the 15th and 16th centuries.

This imposing residence, built at the corner of Rue Grande and Rue du Château, preserves remarkable features such as its molded stringcourse, its corner niche and the arched openings on the ground floor. It once housed grain silos, an oven and market stalls intended to supply the inhabitants in case of siege.

The Belfry, topped with a wrought-iron campanile, is the heir of the former House of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit, which later became the town hall and then the communal house.

Together, these buildings provide a better understanding of the civic, economic and communal life of Ansouis during medieval and early modern times.
