A story shaped by stone and water

At the foot of the Montagnette, Maubec tells a story of hard work, stone and ingenuity. Perched on its rocky spur facing the Luberon, the old village still retains the charm of its cobblestone lanes and 18th-century Provençal houses. Once protected by ramparts, Maubec overlooked the plain while taking advantage of the natural resources of its surroundings.

Although the original medieval village gradually gave way to the modern one, its hydraulic heritage still bears witness to the ancestral know-how of its inhabitants: norias, wells and basins recall a time when water dictated daily life. Between hills and plain, Maubec embodies the typically Provençal balance between history, landscape and art of living.

As you wander through old Maubec, you step back in time along its narrow cobbled streets, golden-stone houses and ancient vaulted passages. The charm of the village lies in the harmony between Provençal architecture and the surrounding natural landscape. Overlooking the plain, the village offers magnificent views of the Monts de Vaucluse and the Luberon, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Every stone seems to tell a story - that of a village shaped by centuries and by water. The wells, norias and basins bear witness to the rural ingenuity of the inhabitants, who mastered local springs to nurture their crops. In Maubec, stone and water unite to form an authentic and poetic landscape, where heritage blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature.

Fountains and Norias - the Living Memory of Maubec

In the heart of Maubec, water has shaped both the landscape and the life of the village. Fountains, basins, wells and norias still bear witness to the expertise of past generations, who skillfully used natural resources to irrigate the land and orchards. This hydraulic heritage, inherited from a long tradition, reflects the ingenuity and deep connection of the people of Maubec with their environment.

Among these witnesses of the past, the noria located on the road to Robion is particularly striking. Built at the end of the 18th century, it once operated through animal power to draw water, supplying the surrounding crops. Restored and highlighted, it stands as a reminder of how vital water was to daily life and the agricultural development of the village. Nearby, a small rest area now offers a peaceful place to pause in the welcoming shade of the trees.
