When does lavender bloom?

Fine lavender begins to bloom in mid-June and reaches its peak between late June and mid-July. Lavandin blooms a bit later, until late July, or even early August at higher altitudes.

Our tip: To enjoy the full colors and avoid the harvest, plan your trip before July 14.

Traditional Self-Guided Tour – The Beautiful Story of Provence Lavender

During this rhythmic and self-paced tour, immerse yourself in the world of fine Provence lavender to discover its history, uses, and benefits. You'll be welcomed with an informative leaflet and an audioguide (children receive a quiz booklet).

To begin your visit, settle into the projection room and watch a beautiful 10-minute documentary on the Lavender Estate Château du Bois, taking you through the lavender harvest season — from blooming to cutting and distillation. A clear explanation will help you understand the difference between lavender and lavandin.

In the exhibition hall, let yourself be transported by the history of lavender through 25 interpretation points from the 16th century to today. Discover a wonderful collection of copper stills, perfume bottles, and vintage labels.

You’ll end your museum tour with a sensory experience: head to the boutique to smell and test the PDO-certified fine lavender essential oil, along with fragrances and organic cosmetics. Children can then correct their quiz with the Lavender team and will receive a Young Lavender Grower diploma.

Children's Workshop: Lavender Sachet & Self-Guided Audio Tour

This workshop invites kids of all ages to create their own aromatic herb sachets to perfume your home! Those little lavender sachets we love to slip into our closets
A fun and hands-on activity, children can personalize their lavender sachet (by choosing their fabric and ribbon) with the help of their instructor, who will introduce them to the Lamiaceae family, close cousins of lavender. They’ll be able to add a pinch of rosemary, sage, thyme, basil, or mint to their custom mix. Of course, they’ll take home their lovely creation! At the end: a quiz and a Young Lavender Grower diploma for your little ones!

The workshop will be followed by a self-guided audio tour, where you’ll learn all there is to know about the story of Fine Lavender from Provence!

Nathalie Maire, a professional watercolor artist, shares her passion for painting using the scented watercolors of the Lavender Museum. These watercolor pans, infused with natural essences used in perfumes, were created exclusively by the Conservatoire des Ocres de Roussillon. Let your creativity and your children’s flourish in this fun and unforgettable workshop! Paint lavender and create your own scented artwork... A wonderful moment of connection with your little ones awaits!

The workshop is followed by a self-guided audio tour where you'll learn everything there is to know about the art of true Provence lavender!

Autour de leur authentique alambic à feu nu, chaque visiteur plonge dans l'alchimie fascinante de l'extraction à la vapeur d'eau pour obtenir le précieux extrait de lavande, connu sous le nom d'huile essentielle.

Guidés par les explications passionnantes du distillateur, les visiteurs vivent une scène d'antan, avec les effluves aromatiques s'échappant du chapeau de l'alambic et l'hydrolat mélangé à l'huile essentielle coulant dans le vase florentin (trieur d'essence). Les jardiniers locaux apportent leurs fleurs fraîchement récoltées, que qu'ils distillent sur place, et repartent avec leur propre essence de lavandin.

In the heart of Cucuron, La Provence en Bouteille offers workshops dedicated to lavender, specially designed for teenagers and adults:

  • Learn how to harvest lavender the traditional way — by hand, with a sickle!

Want to enjoy a timeless moment surrounded by nature in the heart of the Luberon's fragrant fields? This workshop is for you! Join Virginie, a passionate lavender and lavandin producer, and harvest your own bouquet of organic lavandin using the traditional method. Immerse yourself in the authentic world of old-fashioned lavender harvesting.

But that’s not all! Virginie will also share tips on how to dry your flowers properly and preserve their captivating fragrance for years to come — valuable knowledge to keep the scents of Provence alive in your home.

The workshop ends with a friendly tasting session of organic herbal syrups, featuring the delicious lavandin syrup — a true taste of Provence in a bottle.

And of course, you’ll leave with your very own lavandin bouquet, crafted with your own hands. A fragrant and unforgettable souvenir.

All year round, their boutique offers organic essential oils (fine lavender and lavandin), syrups, soaps, and aromatic herbs — all organic, all local.

Every August 15th, the village of Sault, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, celebrates Provence’s most iconic flower with a vibrant, fragrant festival.

Held for over 35 years, the Lavender Festival combines Provençal traditions, family-friendly entertainment, distillation demonstrations, sickle-cutting contests, folk parades, and a local producers’ market. A festive day rooted in the land – perfect for immersing yourself in the region’s lavender-growing culture.

Our tip: arrive early to enjoy the entertainment with your children, avoid the crowds, and soak in the unique summer atmosphere of the Sault plateau.

 


 

As you travel the roads of Provence in search of lavender and lavandin fields… feel free to photograph them, admire them, and take in their beauty — but please don’t step on the plants, don’t pick the flowers, and always respect the work of the farmers :)
