Discover lavender in the Luberon differently: blooming fields, distilleries, workshops, walks, and authentic places to visit between June and July in Provence.
Sommaire
A symbol of Provence, lavender dresses the landscapes of the Luberon in shades of blue, mauve and violet from the very first days of summer. But beyond the photogenic fields and dried bouquets, this plant tells the story of the region, its traditions and the people who cultivate it. A world of its own, vibrant and generous, waiting to be discovered differently.
Here, lavender is not simply admired. It is experienced. You listen to it, breathe it in, pick it, transform it and, above all, share it. Ready to step off the beaten track?

| Criterion | Fine lavender (true lavender) | Lavandin |
|---|---|---|
| Growing altitude | 800 to 1,700 m | Plains and low hills |
| Flowering period | Mid-June to mid-July | Early July to early August |
| Use | Aromatherapy, high-end cosmetics | Perfumery, cleaning products |
| Fragrance | Subtle, floral, soft | More intense, camphorated |

Fine lavender, also known as “true lavender” or “officinal lavender”, or lavandin? While their shades of blue may look similar, their uses are quite different.
Fine lavender, grown at altitudes between 800 and 1,700 metres, is highly prized for its aromatic qualities and medicinal properties, recognised since Antiquity. Lavandin, more robust, thrives in the plains. Both contribute to the agricultural richness of the Luberon, through a demanding sector that respects the natural cycles of the plant.
Flowering, distillation, transformation... each stage relies on ancestral gestures. Lavender is known for its soothing, antiseptic and purifying properties. The Romans already used it in bath water, for the care of both body and mind. Here, lavender has travelled through the centuries without ever losing its soul.
Fine lavender begins to bloom in mid-June and reaches its peak between late June and mid-July. Lavandin flowers a little later, until late July, or even early August at higher altitudes.
Our advice: To make the most of the colours and avoid the harvest period, plan your stay before 10 July.
Our suggestion
Combine your lavender outing with our nature walks and discovery tours or explore our hilltop villages. The Luberon always has a surprise waiting around the corner.
Three places to experience lavender differently, each offering its own unique atmosphere. To make the most of the colours and the peaceful surroundings, plan your visit early in the morning or at the end of the day.

It is impossible to talk about lavender in the Luberon without mentioning Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey.
Set in a secluded valley near Gordes, this 12th-century Cistercian abbey is surrounded by lavandin fields that offer, every summer, a striking scene of beauty and serenity.
Sénanque is a living place, home to a monastic community that continues both a spiritual and agricultural tradition. Lavender is still grown here by the monks, faithful to the rule of Saint Benedict, “ora et labora” (prayer and work). The harvest is entrusted to a local distiller, who transforms it into essential oil and handmade products sold at the abbey.
The guided tour invites visitors to discover Romanesque architecture, monastic life and the close connection between spirituality and working the land.
Our advice: arrive as soon as it opens to enjoy the freshness and peaceful atmosphere of the site before the crowds arrive.

After this spiritual immersion at Sénanque, head to Coustellet for an educational and sensory discovery at the Luberon Lavender Museum, a true conservatory of fine AOP lavender.
Founded in 1991 by Georges Lincelé, a specialist in fine lavender, this family-run museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting lavender-growing heritage. Through carefully designed displays, a unique collection of 346 items (stills, old tools, perfume-making objects) and interactive exhibition areas, you will dive into the world of this iconic flower, from the 16th century to the present day.
The visit, either self-guided with an audio guide or guided, helps visitors understand the essential role of lavender in history, perfumery and aromatherapy. The experience continues with sensory workshops, family activities, seasonal events and a dedicated children’s area with quizzes, digital tools and fun activities.
The museum workshop offers, depending on the season:
A wonderful way to awaken the senses... and awareness, which you can extend in the museum shop, a true showcase of the Lincelé family’s know-how and their fine AOP lavender.
One of the most typical lavender-growing landscapes in the Luberon, this is where rows of lavender stretch as far as the eye can see, between small stone shelters, dry-stone walls and bories. Less visited than other iconic sites, the plateau has preserved its authentic rural charm. It is a typical setting, that of a living rural Provence shaped by traditional agriculture, ideal for lovers of nature and tranquillity.
What if you took the time to explore the Claparèdes Plateau on foot, in Buoux? This 8-kilometre loop trail takes you through flowering lavender, dry-stone walls and open landscapes overlooking the Luberon. Along the way, peace and quiet reign, interrupted only by the song of cicadas or the gentle buzzing of bees.
Here, you encounter a cultivated yet unspoilt landscape, shaped by centuries of farming and pastoral life. The bories, these typical stone huts, line the path and tell the story of life in days gone by. On a clear day, the panorama stretches all the way to the Monts de Vaucluse.
Accessible to all, this walk offers a suspended moment between heritage and living landscapes, ideal for experiencing lavender differently: in silence, light... and slowness.

After this museum and sensory discovery, it is time for adventure with Oh My Deuche!
Aboard an authentic open-top 2CV, set off on a bucolic small-group ride, guided by an enthusiast. Away from the main roads, the route takes you to an organic producer, who will reveal the secrets of this iconic plant and his craft.
On the programme: a friendly encounter, explanations about lavandin cultivation, syrup tasting, discovery of the difference between lavender and lavandin... and above all, a sensitive, timeless experience in the heart of nature.
Optional: a sunset photo shoot, as a family or as a couple, to capture the moment. The experience also includes a lavender souvenir box, a relaxing break and an artisanal ice cream by the pond in Cucuron... along with a generous touch of Provençal conviviality.

To extend the experience and discover lavender in all its richness, head to Sault, at the gateway to the Luberon, where the family-run farm Aroma’Plantes opens its fields, workshops and secrets to you.
Here, everything is designed for a fun and educational immersion:
A committed place, where transmission goes hand in hand with creativity and respect for nature.

Every 15 August, the village of Sault, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, celebrates Provence’s iconic flower with a festival full of colour and fragrance.
Held for more than 35 years, the Lavender Festival brings together Provençal traditions, family activities, distillation demonstrations, sickle-cutting competitions, folklore parades and a producers’ market. A festive day rooted in the local terroir, ideal for immersing yourself in the region’s lavender-growing culture.
Our advice: arrive early to make the most of the activities, avoid the crowds and soak up the unique atmosphere of the Sault plateau in the heart of summer.

Every summer, many visitors come to admire the lavender fields. To help preserve this living heritage:
These simple gestures help avoid disturbing wildlife, as well as repeated trampling of plants and insects, especially bees: this too is part of responsible travel.

Among the iconic brands associated with lavender in Provence, L’OCCITANE en Provence holds a very special place. Founded in 1976 in Manosque, this emblematic brand draws inspiration from Provençal traditions to create skincare products made with fine lavender from Haute-Provence. Through its Lavender collection, L’OCCITANE promotes a local and sustainable sector, combining naturalness with ancestral know-how.
Essential oils, shower gels, creams and scented mists: each product extends the sensory experience of lavender, between well-being, elegance and authenticity. The brand also encourages the transmission of traditional gestures through lavender wand-making workshops, symbols of Provençal craftsmanship, to be discovered depending on the season in store or during creative workshops.
Lavender is a living part of the Luberon, to be discovered with respect, through genuine encounters and educational places. Museums, distilleries, producers and workshops open their doors to you for a different kind of immersion, richer and more local.
Here, the landscape forms a true agricultural patchwork: lavender fields alternate with wheat, cherry trees, vineyards and olive groves. A colourful mosaic that sets the Luberon apart from the more uniform expanses of the Valensole Plateau or the Sault region, at the foot of Mont Ventoux.
From the field to the workshop, from the museum to the walk, you are invited to slow down, breathe and feel. And perhaps leave with a little piece of the Luberon in your heart... or in your suitcase.
