Lavender in the Luberon: discover the essentials... differently

Symbol of Provence: lavender dresses the landscapes of the Luberon in blue, mauve, and violet from the very first days of summer. But beyond the photogenic fields and dried bouquets, it’s a plant that tells the story of the land, its traditions, and its people. A world of its own, vibrant, generous... waiting to be discovered differently.

Because here, lavender is something you experience more than you look at. You hear it, breathe it in, pick it, transform it. And above all, you share it. Ready to step off the beaten path?

An iconic flower of the Luberon, between tradition and passion

Fine lavender, also called "True Lavender" or "Lavandula angustifolia," or lavandin? While the shades of blue are similar, their uses vary.

Fine lavender, grown between 800 and 1,700 meters in altitude, is highly valued for its aromatic qualities and medicinal properties, recognized since Antiquity. Lavandin, which is more robust, grows in the plains. Both contribute to the agricultural wealth of the Luberon through a demanding sector that respects natural cycles.

Flowering, distillation, transformation... each step relies on ancestral practices. Lavender is known for its soothing, antiseptic, and purifying properties. The Romans already used it in bathwater for the care of body and mind. Here, lavender has crossed the centuries without ever losing its soul.

When to see lavender in the Luberon?

  • From mid-June to mid-July: this is the ideal time to see the fields in bloom.
  • But beware, harvesting often starts as early as July 14.
  • To make the most of it, favor mornings or late afternoons.

Our tip

Three places to experience lavender differently

The Abbey of Sénanque – Gordes

Blooming lavender fields in front of Sénanque Abbey in summer

It is impossible to talk about lavender in the Luberon without mentioning the Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey.

Situated in an isolated valley near Gordes, this 12th-century Cistercian abbey is surrounded by fields of lavandin which offer each summer a breathtaking spectacle of beauty and serenity.

But Sénanque is much more than a postcard: it is a living place, inhabited by a monastic community that continues a spiritual and agricultural tradition. The lavender is still cultivated by the monks, faithful to the Rule of Saint Benedict "ora et labora" (pray and work). The harvest is entrusted to a local distiller who transforms it into essential oil and artisanal products sold at the abbey.

The guided tour allows visitors to discover the Romanesque architecture, monastic life, and the close connection between spirituality and working the land.

Our tip: arrive early at opening time to enjoy the freshness and calm of the place before the crowds.

The Lavender Museum – Coustellet

After the spiritual immersion at Sénanque, head to Coustellet for an educational and sensory discovery at the Luberon Lavender Museum, a true conservatory of AOP fine lavender.

Founded in 1991 by Georges Lincelé, a specialist in fine lavender, this family museum is committed to preserving and promoting lavender heritage. Through carefully designed exhibits, a unique collection of 346 pieces (stills, old tools, perfumery objects), and interactive exhibition spaces, you will dive into the world of this iconic flower from the 16th century to today.

The visit (self-guided with audio guide or guided) explains the essential role of lavender in history, perfumery, and aromatherapy. The experience continues with sensory workshops, family activities, seasonal events, and a dedicated children’s area with quizzes, digital tools, and fun activities.

The museum’s workshop offers, depending on the season:

To extend the experience outdoors, the museum also offers an electric bike Lavender Tour from July 1 to 27. Accompanied by a professional guide, explore the fine lavender fields of the Château du Bois estate, perched at 1100 meters altitude, atop the Vaucluse Mountains (Lagarde d’Apt). This 10 km circuit, accessible to all levels, allows you to admire blooming Provençal landscapes, better understand lavender cultivation, and enjoy an environmentally friendly ride punctuated by unforgettable panoramas.

A wonderful way to awaken the senses... and awareness, which you can continue in the museum boutique, a true showcase of the Lincelé family’s expertise and their AOP fine lavender.

The Plateau des Claparèdes – Bonnieux & Saignon

One of the most typical lavender landscapes of the Luberon, here the rows of lavender stretch as far as the eye can see, among small huts, dry stone walls, and bories. Less frequented than other iconic spots, this plateau retains an intact rural charm. It is a typical setting of a rural and vibrant Provence, shaped by traditional agriculture, ideal for nature and tranquility lovers.

Why not take the time to walk the Plateau des Claparèdes in Buoux? This 8-kilometer loop trail takes you through blooming lavender, dry stone walls, and open landscapes overlooking the Luberon. Along the way, calm reigns, only interrupted by the song of cicadas or the gentle buzzing of bees.

Here you find a worked yet untouched nature, shaped by centuries of farming and pastoralism. The bories, typical stone huts, line the trail and tell stories of past life. On clear days, the panorama opens up to the Vaucluse Mountains.

Accessible to all, this walk offers a suspended moment between heritage and living landscapes, perfect to experience lavender differently: in silence, light... and slowness.

Adopt the right habits for responsible tourism

Every summer, many visitors flock to admire the lavender fields. To preserve this living heritage:

  • Do not enter the fields,
  • Do not pick the flowers,
  • Stay on the marked trails,
  • Prefer visits outside peak hours, early in the morning or late afternoon.

These simple actions help avoid disturbing wildlife, as well as repeated trampling of plants and insects, especially bees: this is also what responsible travel means.

In summary...

Lavender is more than just a decoration: it is a living part of the Luberon to be discovered with respect, through sincere encounters and educational places. Museums, distilleries, producers, and workshops open their doors for a different, richer, more local immersion.

Here, the landscape forms a true agrivoltaic patchwork: lavender fields alternate with crops of wheat, cherry trees, vineyards, and olive trees. A colorful mosaic that distinguishes the Luberon from the more homogeneous expanses of the Valensole plateau or the Pays de Sault, at the foot of Mont Ventoux.

From the field to the workshop, from the museum to the walk, you are invited to slow down, breathe, and feel. And maybe leave with a little piece of the Luberon in your heart... or in your suitcase.

What if the discovery didn’t stop there?
