    Product 1 Provençal terroir

    Olive oil from the Luberon

At the mere mention of Provençal cuisine, olive oil immediately comes to mind… and perhaps even to our taste buds, for those who have already sampled our best olive oils! Sometimes, just a single drop of this precious liquid is enough to elevate a dish to something truly luxurious. And for good reason: olive oil has been produced in our region for centuries, becoming both an emblem of Provence and one of the essential local products of the Luberon.

Not only do we use it in our cooking, in all our cooking, but we also taste it in our mills and offer it as a gift to those we want to please during a visit. Think about it. It is a gift that is as useful as its flavour can be subtle.

Good to know: the olive is a fruit, and there are no separate varieties of green olives and black olives. The difference comes from the stage of ripeness and the harvest period.

This may surprise you, but the olive is a fruit. And here is another essential fun fact: there are no separate varieties of green olives and black olives. “Really?” you might say, remembering that you have already eaten both colours. In fact, the colour difference is simply a matter of the fruit’s ripeness and the harvest season. Green olives are younger and are picked first, from September to November, while those harvested between December and January continue to darken until they become brown and black.

Their flavour is more pronounced, and using them to make oil gives our dishes a very different taste. A Provençal cuisine with a thousand flavours, just as we told you.

To learn more about how our olive trees are grown, how fruit filled with the sun of Provence is transformed into olive oils of intense green or surprisingly pale yellow, and to put an end to the belief that the colour of an olive oil determines its quality, take the opportunity during your stay in the Luberon to visit our oil mills. There, you can stroll through endless olive groves, discover the many stages of turning olives into oil and perhaps even breathe in the powerful aroma of freshly pressed olive oil, if your timing is just right. One thing is certain: you will be treated to a tasting, the perfect chance to see how no two olive oils are ever the same and to decide which one best suits your taste or your cooking plans. What a pleasure it is to choose from different bottles of olive oil, one delicate, another more pronounced or intense, and sometimes even a flavoured olive oil. Perhaps you will not leave empty-handed.

    Product 2 Rare flavour

    Truffle from the Luberon

Less well known than olive oil, the truffle of the Luberon deserves your attention. It is a product that is particularly prized, both because of its rarity and its ability to perfume a dish. The truffle is one of those local products of the Luberon that we treasure most, so much so that here we call it the black diamond of Vaucluse.

This department is in fact the leading producer of truffles, thanks to its Mediterranean climate and its limestone and stony soils. It was also in Vaucluse that the production of black truffle first developed, tuber melanosporum being its Latin name.

To choose the very best truffle, focus on freshness and colour: the fresher the truffle, the stronger its aroma, and the darker it is, the riper and more intense it will be.

So tell us, what do you really know about truffles? Perhaps we can help guide you in discovering them. Among the local products of the Luberon, look for the label “Black Diamond of Vaucluse” to identify the finest quality recommended by our truffle growers. Black truffle is sold as it is, to enhance and elevate a simple omelette for example, but it is also available in truffle-based products: Luberon truffle creams, Luberon truffle oil and more.

Still relatively little known, the truffle certainly deserves some of your attention during your stay in the Luberon. To enter this unique and astonishing world, our local producers offer surprising experiences unlike anything you are likely to enjoy elsewhere. Alongside our truffle growers Laurence, Géo, Robert and others, take part in truffle hunting on our Luberon truffle fields, accompanied by a truffle dog to uncover the famous mushroom hidden underground. And as you might imagine, of course you will be able to taste it. Remember, freshness is key, so with a harvest of the day, you should be in for a treat.

    Product 3 Natural sweetness

    Honey from the Luberon

Here is one you probably know well: honey. But have you ever had the opportunity to taste our Luberon honeys, among the most delicious and exquisite local products of the Luberon? Honey, the ultimate beekeeping product, is the result of the work of our friends the bees, whose job as pollinators gradually leads to the production of honey within the hives.

Beehives are set up in different natural locations, close to the fields where the bees forage. This proximity determines both the quality and the flavour of the honey, depending on whether the bees have collected nectar from lavender, creating a delicately scented honey, chestnut blossoms, giving it a woody intensity, or wildflowers, producing a floral garrigue honey.

Experience to enjoy: meet a beekeeper from the Luberon, understand the work of bees and discover the different honey aromas depending on the flowering seasons.

To immerse yourself in the gentle world of honey, our passionate beekeepers in the Luberon invite you to meet them on their bee farms, far from intensive crops, sometimes in the honey house where the honey is extracted and stored, sometimes out in nature to discover the production area and its specific features. It is an opportunity to learn more about bees and their role at the heart of local biodiversity, to become more aware of their protection and natural habitat, and to discover how our exceptional artisanal honeys are produced, along with their nutritional qualities and diverse natural aromas. Should we add that, thanks to its excellent keeping qualities, honey is often a sweet and delicious gift idea? Yes, that is a little hint.

    Product 4 Exceptional vineyard

    Wines of the Luberon

Each region has its own wine, and the Luberon is no exception, with a natural heritage, the vine, and a cultural heritage, the know-how, that has flourished since Antiquity. Some family estates have produced generations of winegrowers. Indeed, wine production in the Luberon has existed for thousands of years and is now recognised and rewarded by different quality labels such as the protected designations of origin (PDO) Luberon, Ventoux and Pierrevert, as well as the controlled designation of origin (AOC) Luberon.

But what exactly are the wines of the Luberon? To speak of them most accurately, it is better to refer to the wines of the Luberon and Ventoux, which are closely linked because of the proximity of the territories and the similarity of the soils and growing conditions. In the Luberon, we produce wine in three colours: powerful reds, refreshing and light rosés, and aromatic whites.

More and more of our wine producers in the Luberon are turning to organic farming, in keeping with the natural environment they are fortunate enough to cultivate. As a result, the Luberon offers a growing range of organic wines, like an ode to our exceptional region.

Powerful reds, light rosés, aromatic whites: the Luberon vineyard is discovered as much in the glass as in the landscape, from estate to cellar.

To explore the Luberon and taste its wines as local products of the Luberon not to be missed, come and meet our winegrowers. Châteaux and estates gladly open their doors all year round and even offer immersive experiences, from a walk through the vineyards on sunny hillsides, to a visit of the cellars and, time and again, fascinating tastings of Luberon wines in exceptional settings.

    Short supply chains

This is our chance to give you a whole range of opportunities to find your favourite artisanal products and bring home a little piece of Provence, to enjoy on the spot or take back with you. Delicious.

More authentic than a supermarket, more beneficial for producers and more enjoyable for you, we like to promote the distribution of our local Luberon products through short supply chains. It is indeed a great way to support local farming while also encouraging quality seasonal food. Enjoy strawberries and asparagus in April. It is also a unique opportunity to meet and exchange with enthusiastic, passionate and friendly producers who connect directly with consumers.

What could feel more local than taking part in traditional producers’ markets? It is market day, tote bag in hand, menus on your mind or sweet treats in your thoughts, and you stroll through the market stalls like a local, looking for Provençal ingredients, artisanal products and Luberon specialties. This experience may seem simple, yet it is a true symbol of Provence and of holidays, as long as you take the time to wander.

    Direct sales

At the source of local products from the Luberon

How could you be better served than by going straight to the source of the products? Our suggestion is simple: take the time during your stay to stop along the way, visit a picturesque farm, enjoy a bite to eat and select a few products to your taste, then set off again and, whenever the chance arises, stop at another inspiring place that will delight your senses.

Direct sales locations are sometimes production sites, but above all they are places of encounter, sharing and discovery, thanks to the unique experiences developed by our producers to share their world with you.

    On site, you can notably:

    visit wine estates

    discover market gardens and farms

find small producers along your way

Immerse yourself in the warm and friendly atmosphere that fills these places rich in history and know-how. It is a great combination of a pleasant activity and a tasty way to stock up, perfect to suggest to your travel companions. The pleasure of tasting also lies in the whole story behind the product, does it not? For example, if you visit Lourmarin, taste its specialty: the Gibassier, a crumbly sweet flat cake with a very recognisable shape whose not-so-secret ingredient is olive oil.

For an even more immersive experience, you could try agritourism and stay on a farm in the Luberon, on an estate in the heart of the Luberon Natural Park, among the trees of an organic olive grove, or even stay within the walls of a Provençal bastide in the middle of the vineyards.
